The Certified
Surgical Assistant (CSA) designation is available to qualified applicants.
Individuals wishing to apply for Membership and/or Certification must qualify in
one of the following categories: 1. Graduates from approved Surgical Assistant Training Programs (NSAA approved Surgical Assistant Programs). Documentation required: 1. NSAA Membership/Certification Application 2. Copy of certificate from training program. 2. Medical Graduates and Allied Health Professionals Medical Doctor/Doctor of Osteopathy/Foreign Medical Graduate: Documentation required: 1. NSAA Membership/Certification Application 2. One letter of recommendation from a Surgeon 3. COPIES of documents of training as a surgeon or documentation of surgical rotation for at least 2250 hours of surgical experience within the last five (5) years. 4. For FMG ONLY– you must either provide a copy of your English Equivalency Exam, or request a waiver of that exam, with full knowledge that the Certification Examination is given in English.
RN/PA/CFA/SA-C/OPA-C: Documentation required 1. NSAA Membership/Certification Application 2. Both NSAA Affidavits – signed and notarized 3. Three (3) letters of recommendation from surgeons you have assisted. 4. One (1) year of case log showing the YOUR name as the assistant and the type of surgeries 5. Copy of Current Certification and/or License (must have held Certification or Licensure for the past 3 years and have a total of 2250 hours of first assistant experience) 3. US Military Trained Documentation required 1. NSAA Membership/Certification Application 2. One letter of recommendation from a surgeon the individual has assisted within the last three years. 3. Copy of DD214 or Certificate/Diploma from a military training program, that had emphasis on surgical assisting 4. 6 months to 1 year case log within the past 3 years |top| AS OF DECEMBER 1, 2008 NSAA MUST APPROVE ALL SURGICAL ASSISTANT EDUCATION PROGRAMS PRIOR TO THEIR GRADUATES SITTING FOR THE CSA CERTIFICATION EXAMINATION. NSAA WILL NO LONGER RELY SOLELY ON CAAHEP ACCREDITATION OF SURGICAL ASSISTANT PROGRAMS.Requests for program review must be made through the NSAA National Office, and will be systematically reviewed by the NSAA Board of Directors and its Education Review Committee. The application process may take up to 60 days.
