Certification and Certified Member Qualifications

The Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) designation is available to qualified applicants. You must qualify in ONE of the categories listed below.

1.     Graduates from approved Surgical Assistant Training Programs (all CAAHEP Accredited SA Programs; Rochester, MN Mayo Clinic Training Program; and Canton, OH Aultman Hospital Training Program).
Documentation required: 
a) NSAA application
b) Copy of certificate from training program.

2.      Medical Graduates and Allied Health Professionals - US or Foreign trained medical school graduates with appropriate number of hours (2250) of surgery or surgical rotation and the following documentation:  one letter from a surgeon recommending the individual, COPIES of documents of training as a surgeon or documentation of surgical rotation for at least 2250 hours of assisting, and proof of having taken an English equivalency examination. Licensed PAs and RNs with appropriate number of hours of surgical first assisting (2250).
Documentation required:
a) NSAA application
b) NSAA affidavits (2)
c) Letters of recommendation from five (5) surgeons the individual has assisted
d) One (1) year of case log showing the name of the assistant and the type of surgery.

3.     US Military Trained – Individuals who present verifiable documentation of graduation from a United States Military Program that emphasized surgical assisting.
Documents required:
a) A copy of DD214 or Certificate/Diploma from a military training program, showing OR training
b) The NSAA application and one letter of recommendation from a surgeon the individual has assisted.

Once the application is received, you will be sent a confirmation postcard. Upon approval of the application, you will be sent all study material along with the scheduled exam dates.

Certification Fee Sign Up and Annual Fee $500.00
Certification Exam Fee $750.00
Re-take Fee $400.00

APPLICATION REQUIRES FULL PAYMENT OF CERTIFICATION SIGN UP FEE.

CANDIDATE MEMBER (ELIGIBLE TO BECOME CERTIFIED)
Membership and Certification Annual Fee $300.00

(This fee for applicants for membership may be paid quarterly and is prorated - a check, money order or credit card payment for $75 must accompany application)

Certification Exam Fee $300.00
Re-Take Fee $150.00

EXAM FEES MUST BE PAID PRIOR TO SITTING FOR THE CERTIFICATION EXAMIINATION.
