PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Fellow N.S.A.A. Members,
I wanted to give you all an
update on how things in our fine
organization are progressing. First of
all, our numbers are increasing. For
the second year in a row, we have had
record membership numbers. I am
sure this is due, in part, by your
spreading the word about our organi-
zation, the high standards we repre-
sent, and the good work that is being
done on the legislative front. We have
also broken all previous records for
the administering of certification
exams. Congratulations to all of our
newly certified members. We welcome
you to the profession of Surgical
Assisting and look forward to your
contributions toward excellent care of
the surgical patient. I hope all of you
are as proud of this fine association as
I am. Always strive for excellence,
continue your education, and practice
with the well-being and safety of the
patient as your key concern. Here are
some of the efforts your Board of
Directors has going:
We continue to evaluate new
Surgical Assisting programs around the
country, and I am happy to say that
there are quite a few of them out there
that meet our high standards. These
new schools are critical to elevating the
educational standards as well as to sus-
taining the growth of our profession.
We are also continuing to get fan-
tastic reports from our members all
over the United States about the excel-
lent legislative progress that is being
made around the country. If you are
interested in starting a grassroots cam-
paign in your area, please contact the
office for further information.
I am extremely pleased to
announce that every effort is being
made by the Board of Directors of
NSAA as well as key members around
the country to approach every project
with a unified voice, which means
including other credentialed Assistants
and Credentialing organizations. This
effort to unify the profession is a key
objective for NSAA, and we will con-
tinue to take a leadership role in defin-
ing the guidelines of the profession of
Surgical Assisting, and in preparing for
the rapid growth and increased utiliza-
tion of Surgical Assistants. To this
end, we are continuing the excellent
dialog we have established with other
credentialing bodies such as The
American Society of Orthopedic
Physician’s Assistants and the Liaison
Council for the Certification of the
Surgical Technologist.
As the GAO report stated last
year, there has been a tremendous
increase in the utilization of non-
physician surgical assistants, and I
expect the demand to continue. In
order to meet the increasing demands
and insure that patients are getting
the best qualified Surgical Assistants
possible, the National Surgical
Assistant Association continues to re-
evaluate its membership requirements,
as well as the education, experience,
and training requirements necessary
to sit for our exam, and earn our
prestigious credential. With that in
mind, the Board of Directors has
unanimously passed a change in the
