The killing of George Floyd was senseless and could have been avoided. It is not possible that in America, a black man’s life can be taken while calls for help go unanswered, and his killing is recorded on a phone as it happens.
Let us pray for George Floyd and the loved ones that he leaves behind, and on behalf of NSAA’s Board of Directors; we share the outrage and frustration of the black community and those who stand with them across the country. We believe that the cruelty and violence he suffered does not reflect on the majority of good men and women in law enforcement, who carry out their duties with respect and honor.
We should acknowledge that the protests reflect the justified frustration and anger of our brothers and sisters who even in this day and age, experience humiliation and unequal opportunity only because of their race or the color of their skin. This should not happen in our country!
Violence is self-destructive and self-defeating. It is to be condemned. It is never part of any solution, it is part and parcel of the very problem we protest. It hurts and affects so many other innocent people and nothing is gained and so much is lost. Let us focus on the goal so true and lasting change can be achieved.
We should not let it be said that George Floyd died for no reason. We should honor the sacrifice of his life by removing racism and hate from our hearts and renewing our commitment to be a beloved community of life, respect, liberty, and equality for all.
