Fellowship Specialty Workshops

Each of NSAA’s Fellowship Specialties will hold separate “Hands-On” workshops on Friday afternoon.
These workshops are limited to @20 participants and open to all current Specialty Fellow members.
Participants must sign up at the conference registration desk at check in. If space is available, non-
specialty members may participate (requires completion of On-site Specialty Application). All spaces
are on a first come basis.

Fellowship – Robotic & Minimally Invasive Specialty Workshop -
               “Single Site Surgery”

"Every 60 seconds, somewhere in the world, a robotic assisted surgery is performed”. According to the
current statistics from Intuitive Surgical, creator of the DaVinci Surgical System, robotic and minimally
invasive surgeries are being relied upon more than ever to treat a wide range of conditions, from simple
cyst excisions to complex cancer treatments. In addition, National Patient Safety Goals are aimed at
decreasing surgical site infections. Increased focus has also been placed on patient outcomes and
satisfaction scores, which now have a direct effect on healthcare reimbursement. As a result, the
development and implementation of effective "Single Site" surgical systems is a primary focus for many
surgical companies and surgeons alike. This year's Robotic and Minimally Invasive surgery workshop will
highlight several such methods for performing surgery through a single incision. Discussion will include
techniques, applications, advantages, limitations, and problem-solving strategies for a variety of models
including Laparoscopy, Robotic Assisted (both SI and XI), and TAMIS.

Fellowship – Plastic & Reconstructive Specialty Workshop
               “New Technology for Breast Reconstructions”

With an estimated 250,000 women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer last year, the physical and
psychosocial benefit of breast reconstruction surgery is immense. This year’s plastic surgery workshop
will highlight some newer technology for breast reconstructions that allow for a smoother surgery and
easier post-operative maintenance. Vendors will be attending to introduce the Radialux© lighted
retractor, and AirXpanders©, a carbon dioxide filled tissue expander. Also, the loss of the nipple-areolar
complex can be traumatizing for some women, but newer techniques with tattooing reconstruction has
allowed these women to achieve a sense of normalcy following reconstruction. This workshop will
highlight nipple-areolar reconstruction techniques and give participants a chance to practice their
               tattooing skills.

               Fellowship – Orthopaedic Specialty Workshop
               “Rotator Cuff Repair”

One of the most common reasons people enter an orthopedic surgeon’s office is because of rotator cuff
tears. Almost eight million people in the US will suffer from a shoulder injury this year and over half of
them will be a direct result of injuring the rotator cuff. With a wide array of innovative shoulder repair
solutions, Smith & Nephew gives surgeons a comprehensive product offering for rotator cuff repairs. This
workshop will highlight some of the techniques, from a steady starting position to a precisely controlled
single or double row anchor fixation solution, participants will become familiar with what it takes to
overcome specific challenges in Rotator Cuff Repairs.
