Dr. Robert F. Dunton
Dr. Robert F Dunton is a Cardiothoracic Surgeon from Newport News, Virginia. He
graduated, Cum Laude, from Albany Medical College in Albany, NY. Dr. Dunton
completed a General Surgery Internship at the Hartford Hospital in Hartford, CT
where he was presented with the Upjohn Outstanding Intern Award. Following his
General Surgery Residency at Hartford Hospital, Dr. Dunton completed a Cardiac
Surgery Residency as Senior Resident at Boston Children’s Hospital in Boston, MA.
Continuing with his passion for Cardiothoracic Surgery, he completed a Fellowship
at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston, MA. Later in 2010, Dr. Dunton
furthered his educational desires by earning a Master of Science in Bioethics at the
Union Graduate College and Mount Sinai School of Medicine in Schenectady, NY.
Prior to practicing in Hampton Roads in 2007, Dr. Dunton served as a cardiothoracic
surgeon at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Concord, N.H. In this capacity,
he was involved in active management of clinical service, growth of services, public
and medical community education and clinical care of cardiothoracic surgical
patients. Also, he served as the medical coordinator of the Concord Hospital Open
Heart Program and as an assistant professor of surgery at Dartmouth Medical
School. He was involved in academic activities at Northeastern University Perfusion
Training Program and research activities for the Northern New England
Cardiovascular Disease Study Group.
Dr. Dunton holds current Board Certification in General Surgery with the American
Board of Surgery and in Cardiothoracic Surgery with the American Board of
Thoracic Surgery. He also currently holds a Medical License in New Hampshire, New
York, and Virginia. Dr. Dunton has co-authored and published numerous articles
and has presented papers to many surgical societies. He has been a member of the
American Heart Association Council on Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia since
2004. Dr. Dunton is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons and the American
College of Chest Surgeons and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
