Dr. Jeffrey Carlson


               Dr. Jeffrey Carlson is President and Managing Partner of Orthopaedic and Spine Center, and a highly
               respected leader in the field of Orthopaedic Surgery.


               Dr. Carlson received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland and obtained his M.D.
               from George Washington University in 1993, where he also was awarded the Embryology Achievement
               Award and the Outstanding Student of the Year Award.  After completing his residency at Harvard
               University, he did fellowships in Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and in
               Orthopaedic Spine Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, both in Boston, MA.  In 1999, he joined
               Orthopaedic and Spine Center in Newport News, where he specializes in treating disorders of the spine.
               He is a former Chief-of Surgery at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, VA.

               A pioneer in using new technologies to improve spine surgery, Dr. Carlson was the first surgeon on the
               Peninsula to perform a Cervical Disc Replacement in 2008. He led the effort to bring computer-assisted
               knee replacement technology to Hampton Roads and broke new ground in the field of spinal osteotomy.

               He has appeared on multiple TV news shows as an expert on Orthopaedics and appeared with Dr. Oz in
               2010 at the Successful Aging Forum.  He also teaches and lectures extensively to other spine surgeons
               around the world.

               He has served on numerous hospital boards as well as educational boards for teaching resident
               physicians and physicians in practice. Dr. Carlson was the Arthritis Foundation of Virginia’s Medical
               Excellence Award Recipient for 2011 and 2016.


               Dr. Carlson and his wife, Sandra, have 3 children and live in Newport News.  In addition to his profession
               as a spine surgeon, he is also master carpenter and a former body-builder, who still enjoys lifting
               weights and working out.
